John McCain has picked Alaska governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate.

   That's an interesting choice, and I think a very smart one. I'm not sure I agree with it, but it is smart. Palin has a much-touted (probably exaggerated, but whatever), record of fighting waste, she's extremely pro-life, and not least importantly, she's a woman. Call me sexist, but I personally know some Hillary supporters who were on her side solely because she lacks a Y chromosome, and they now have a very good reason to vote for McCain: Palin.

   Plus, groups that are traditionally very outspoken on the Democratic side of things, particularly unions and feminists, now have no excuse to throw in publicly with the leftists in this race. I'm sure they will privately support Obama, and I'm sure the CNN Ministry of Truth won't even attempt to address it, but they're hamstrung in the public arena from the get-go.

   Turns out this race might not be quite as Obamacentric as it seemed from the past year's coverage. NPR still throws his name out 4-to-1 or so when compared to McCain's, but it's NPR. Nobody listens to it that's not planning on voting straight Donkey anyway (or further left than that). Well, except my family, but we're all kinds of anomalous already.

I'm playing Rondo of Swords right now. Good game. Similar to Fire Emblem, but harder and with a much more range-focused mechanic. Your melee fighters (using what's called the "pass-through system" can just zip through multiple enemy units, damaging them all- but the enemies can do the same to you, so spacing is key to the battles. The story's functional if dull, but thankfully it doesn't take up too much gaming time like the Fire Emblem stories tend to do. The game lacks a few of the frills found in most SRPGs, particularly certain aesthetic touches (animation sequences when your units move spaces) and stat information (such as details on the likelihood of a particular hit landing). Personally, I prefer it that way- it feels closer to a board game than a video game, and that's always been the appeal of SRPGs to me.

It's worth a look if you like strategy RPGs. The pass-through system alone makes it feel more fresh than much of the SRPG microcosm in the past few years.

Book status: 3 and 1/4 Dresden Files books read so far.

This morning it was cool enough that when I left my windows open, it almost felt like the AC was on. Ah yes, it's the simple things in life.

I love fall. Not because I like the fall, but because the fall is the end of hot weather, and I don't like hot weather, or warm weather, or anything of the sort- unless the wind is blowing. Wind makes hot weather okay.

I checked out 19 books at the library last night. In fairness, only 11 of them were for me; the others were for Lesley and Abby. Current status: 1 and 3/4 books read out of 11.

More bugs in our house last week. Spiders. Again. Possible Black Widows. Again. At this point I feel like I should just Copy+Paste all my old Xanga entries, since my life apparently runs in cycles. It would save me a bit of effort, but it might get awkward when I get to the parts about the cute things Abby did last year. She still does cute things, but not the same type.

Ever notice how on movies, the wheels of cars and carriages sometimes seem to be standing still or moving backwards, even while the vehicle is traveling forwards? It's pretty obvious that the phenomenon occurs because the movies' frames don't actually move fast enough to film every individual state of said wheels, so it becomes impossible to actually see the correct motion of the wheels.

Ever driven on a highway at night, and noticed the exact same phenomenon on real, solid car wheels right next to your car? Because I have, and it completely freaked me out. It took my understanding of reality and turned it inside-out (on a minor scale) for a few seconds.

Then I figured out what caused that effect, and reality was restored. For now.

Do you know why cars' wheels seem to be turning backwards on the highway at night?

The season finale of The Office mostly made up for the messed-up return of the series.

On another note, I'm not dead.

On a fourth note, I got a Wii. Finally.

On a fifth note, I ate the third note.

On a seventh note, because I was hungry.

On the eighth note, I got hungry enough to eat another note.

On the sixth note, I didn't eat the note titled "another note."

On the tenth note, the sixth note had escaped, so I ate a different note.

Last night's Office? Ick.

Barely any office, hence barely any office interaction. Boo.

Jan is insane, and Michael has all of a sudden acquired a healthy mix of self-awareness and passive-aggressiveness. The horrible awkwardness almost never let up. And not in a funny, "Office" way, either- more of a (as Pam puts it) "Let's see how uncomfortable we can make our guests feel" way. Boo.

Jim trying to desert Pam? Lame. Boo.

Jan and Michael fighting. Overplayed. Boo.

Speaking of which, Jan and Michael were far too prominent throughout the episode. I don't care if it took place in their condo; there was still so much wasted potential with the other people in the show. You've got some of the most idiosyncratic characters in the series (Andy, Dwight, Angela) in the room and all you hear is Michael blatantly "not complaining" about having to sleep at the foot of the bed. Boo.

Granted, there were a couple of good parts- Jim intentionally misunderstanding Michael during charades (while Angela kept asking for more obvious clues than "governor of California") was great, as was his theft of Hunter's CD from the apartment.

Oh, dear Lord, Jan dancing to Hunter's CD. I'm going to go puke.
